Famous Artwork Depicts Animals

What comes to mind when you think of Christian art work? More than likely you think of crosses, Jesus, possibly the image of a nearly naked Adam and Eve covered only by some aptly placed leaves. However, have you ever stopped to think about the place of animals in Christian artwork?

Most Biblical stories, as well as most famous artwork of the Christian variety includes at least one animal. The dove, the sheep, the snake — what about Noah's ark? Animals are in fact as much a part of Christianity as the people themselves. Though often overlooked, animals are a huge part of Christianity and in turn a huge part of the famous artwork of the religion.

Animals are often used to represent metaphorical ideas that humans on their own could not adequately illustrate. This is something that Dr. Susan Power Bratton of Baylor University decided to bring to light in her article Animals in Christian Art: New Terrain?

Bratton's article was written as a guest piece for The Washington Post. It is worth a read for anyone interested in Christian art.
